Piped Porcelain cupcakes with Ebony Russell Learn playful and experimental approaches to decorating and ceramic surfaces in this hands-on workshop with Ebony Russell. Ebony will demonstrate how to create intricate, decorative textures using piped porcelain. Participants will begin by learning how to process porcelain into a thick slurry suitable for use with piping bags and tips. From there, Ebony will guide students through techniques for applying piped decoration to hand-built forms. Participants will gain an understanding of timing, structure, and material behaviour when working with wet porcelain and applied decoration. This workshop is ideal for artists looking to expand their ceramic practice through expressive and unconventional making techniques, while also being accessible and enjoyable for beginners who are new to working with clay. Ebony Russell is an Australian artist working primarily with porcelain. Her practice centres on highly labour-intensive, hand-piped ceramic forms that draw on traditions of domestic craft, ornamentation, and decorative excess. She has exhibited internationally, including at Homo Faber, Venice; Art Miami; Collect, London; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; and The Jingdezhen Grand Prize, China. Russell has received significant international recognition, including the Brookfield Properties Craft Award, UK (2025); the Jingdezhen Art Prize, China (Emerging Artist, 2025); the Franz International Rising Star Award, China (2018); and the Meroogal Women’s Art Prize, Australia (2023). Her work is held in major public collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Crafts Council Collection, UK.
