Lisa Geue - 2 day handbuilding workshop

Service Description

Join us for two days of day of handbuilding coil vessels with artist, Lisa Geue. Lisa will share her techniques of handbuilding forms and guide you to make your own unique hand built vessel. Day 1 focuses on learning how to coil correctly, getting a feeling for haptic and different thicknesses of coils, which allows students’ individual characteristics to be observed during coiling. Day 2 focuses on gaining height with developing awareness for ratio and shape, as we continue to focus on coiling. This day is also about focusing on reshaping and details like the rim, texture, and slips. On both days, Lisa will guide participants to create moon jars as they offer an excellent possibility to learn about symmetry. Day 2 is also an opportunity for participants to experiment with shapes, like rectangular or abstract forms. During the workshop, Lisa will also encourage participants to build a communal big pot. This activity is always a highlight of her workshops and is received with a lot of enthusiasm. Participants will learn and use traditional coiling and carving techniques, explore working with clay, creating both functional and non-functional objects with simple shapes and forms, while focusing on the experience as process-oriented learning. The workshop will include using carving tools and paddles to create some of the most worshipped forms, including the sphere or the Moon Jar, honoured around the world as a recurring shape across time and eras. Learn to create in an experimental way, rather than a result-driven one. Your creative process, artistic output and your acquisition of knowledge are the aims of this workshop. Lisa Geue is an East German born, multidisciplinary artist currently working with clay, creating vessels inspired by her ancient ancestors and organic looking sculptures with a focus on form and experimental glazing. Her work can be described as the reclamation of the female identity in a generation that is still fighting to bring down walls. She creates in a fragmental and experimental way, constantly pushing the boundaries of the material she is using. She was an Artist in Residence at Auckland Studio Potters, Auckland and Sturt Gallery.
