Service Description

Surface Stories Justine Wellman Saturday 7 March AND Sunday 8 March (when booking in select 7 March on calendar. You will be booked in to attend both days 10am -4pm) Explore surface design and create your own clay story. This two-day workshop focuses on printmaking techniques adapted to clay for ceramic artists interested in illustration and image-making on the surface of their work. The approach is exploratory and process-driven, with an emphasis on developing ideas that tell stories through the revealing of layers. Over the course of the workshop, you’ll be guided through abstract and pictorial underglaze monoprinting, learning how imagery can be transferred, layered, and reworked to create depth and visual coherence. We’ll look closely at how surface, form, and repetition interact, and how small technical decisions can shape the final outcome. I’ll share how I build and use a reusable library of stencils in my own practice to develop a cohesive body of work. You’ll design and make your own stencils and work with them alongside monoprinting and other complementary surface techniques to create a layered artwork on clay. The workshop allows time for demonstrations, testing, refinement, and discussion, with individual guidance throughout. Participants will leave with finished or in- progress works, a set of self-made stencils, and a clear framework for continuing this approach in their own studio practice. This workshop is suited to ceramic artists who want to develop illustrated surfaces and who already have a basic familiarity with clay and underglaze. It’s ideal for those interested in image-making, narrative, pattern, or drawing on clay, and for artists looking to build a more cohesive and intentional surface language. This workshop does not cover glazing techniques.
