Developing a unique technique of piping porcelain into intricate layers, she creates gravity-defying forms where ornamentation becomes structure, erasing the boundaries between vessel and embellishment. Her work interrogates cultural and artistic practices once dismissed as feminine or insignificant, instead celebrating excess, pleasure, and the politics of decoration. Russell completed a Bachelor of Applied Arts (Honours) at Monash University in 2003 and a Master of Fine Art at the National Art School, Sydney in 2019. She has received numerous awards, including the Brookfield Properties Craft Award (London Collect 2025), the Meroogal Women’s Art Prize (2022), and the Franz International Rising Star Award (2018). In 2025, she was a finalist in the Art Gallery of New South Wales Wynne Prize. Her recent exhibitions include Decorated: The Sculptural Ceramics of Ebony Russell (London, 2025), Homo Faber (Venice, 2024), and 1001 Remarkable Objects (Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, 2023) Her work is held in many collections including The Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
