In Dr Julie Bartholomew's first intensive handbuilding masterclass on the South Coast, you can expect to spend 5 days immersed in Experimental Handbuilding: Surface and Form. This is a dynamic workshop that explores slab building and a variety of surface embellishment techniques using terracotta clay. The emphasis is on developing experimental slab forms with an orientation towards vessel structures. Julie provides demonstrations of slab construction and surface treatment techniques including brushwork, underglaze and slip application, mono print release, tissue transfer, sgraffito, stamping, sprigging and slip trailing. The workshop encourages the integration of two-dimensional surface techniques with innovative three-dimensional slab forms. This class is best suited to intermediate to advanced hand builders who are keen to take their work to the next level. This masterclass is a practical, ‘hands on’, participatory session and will include demonstrations and artist talk by Julie. Participants will be using the studio clay to allow for plenty of opportunity to practice. Midfire clay will also be available for purchase. Included: • 5 days of demonstrations, input, tuition and technical assistance from Julie • Morning tea each day • Tea/coffee • Use of studio tools/equipment • Bisque firing of up to 5 items per person • Clay • Materials, slip, underglazes etc What to bring: • Apron, favourite tools (we have plenty of tools to use in the studio if you don’t bring any with you) , notebook and pen/pencil , water bottle, lunch Artist bio Dr Julie Bartholomew Julie Bartholomew is a craft-based artist, educator and writer. As an artist working with ceramics, and more recently glass, Julie has maintained a high research and exhibition profile through academic studies, exhibitions in Australia and abroad, published articles and art residencies. Throughout her career, Julie has been inspired by cultural issues and social debates. Her art practice has responded to environmental concerns since 2010, with the intention of creating conversations around species extinction and our climate emergency. Julie has been the recipient of multiple awards including five Australia Council for the Arts New Work Grants. Julie won the 2006 International Gold Coast Ceramics Award. Her work is held in prestigious public collections including the National Gallery of Australia, National Museum of Australia, Shepparton Art Museum and Yingge Ceramics Museum in Taiwan.
